Vocal Health – Hydration

Health wise, being well hydrated is one of the most important things a singer can do. Not only does drinking plenty of fluid keep us healthy for life in general, but as singers it is imperative that we keep ourselves (and our vocal folds!) well lubricated. Make sure you drink around 8 glasses of water a day – not fizzy drinks, tea, coffee or wine. Water.

Vocal Health – Hydration

Try to sip throughout the day rather than drinking loads at once and also remember that you need to have a glass around 30 minutes before singing to ensure your super awesome vocal folds have time to hydrate properly. This allows them to work at their optimum, meaning you perform at your best too.

Regarding beating illness, if you’re suffering from tummy bugs, coughs or colds, hydration is even more important than normal! Flush away the nasty bugs, replenish water lost and keep those poor folds from scratching and becoming more inflamed. Remember, if you’re suffering with voice loss, sometimes the best cure is total voice rest – that means no singing at all! If you do catch something ikky that’s preventing you singing at your best, look after yourself and listen to what your body tells you.
